Dream Settlements

Downtime Currencies & Exchange

The Philosophy of Conceptual Architecture

Traditional settlement rules in Dungeons & Dragons treat civilization as a physical anchor—a rigid exercise in stone, mortar, gold coins, and logistical attrition. You clear timber, lay foundations, hire stonecutters, and pay weekly wages to defend walls against siege engines.

In the Plane of Dreams, matter follows mind. Physical gold is useless where reality itself is fluid, and standard stone crumbles under the weight of shifting subconscious tides. The Dream Settlement System discards terrestrial logistics in favor of Metaphysical Architecture:

  • Thought as Currency, Intent as Steel: Gold is replaced by Lucid Remnants (pure will), Woven Memories(focused experience), and Echo Stone (crystallized emotion). Buildings are not assembled from brick, but manifested from the collective consciousness of the populace and held together by sheer lucidity.
  • Mastering Impermanence: The dreamscape resists permanence. Without constant mental focus, structures drift, warp, or dissolve back into chaotic ether. The Oneiric Anchor and the Reality Sever hazard mechanics reflect this constant struggle—your village is not just a passive physical site, but a living, breathing psychic bubble carved out of raw infinity.
  • Resonance over Real Estate: Instead of simply offering a room to sleep or a vault to hoard coin, every structure acts as a conceptual tuning fork. Through Attunement, player characters directly synchronize their personal aura with the settlement’s facilities—translating architectural progression into tangible, reality-bending buffs, energy immunities, and narrative probability control across the outer planes.

Why Use This System Over Standard Settlement Rules?

Standard D&D Settlement RulesThe Dream Settlement System
Resource Sink: Demands thousands of GP and months of mundane downtime for minor mechanical returns.Active Gameplay Loop: Integrates directly with adventuring yield (WM, LR, ES) harvested from planar journeys.
Static & Fragile: Subject to mundane physical destruction, disease, and siege warfare.Dynamic & Conceptual: Threatened by cognitive hazards (mind probes, memory leaks, somnambulist surges) and bolstered by planar resonance.
Passive Utility: Serves primarily as a resting spot or gold-generation engine between quests.Personal Empowerment: Features a 1-building Attunement limit that forces meaningful tactical choices for upcoming planar expeditions.
Grounded Logistics: Bound by local terrestrial economies, timber, stone, and artisan labor.Multiversal Hub: Modularly scales into spelljammer drydocks, narrative probability theaters, and plane-hopping spires.

In the Plane of Dreams, physical gold is substituted by metaphysical components that bypass standard market restrictions:

  • Lucid Remnants (LR): Solidified will and clarity. Can replace base GP material components for magic item creation. DM’s may award = per 10GP obtained in and adventure
  • Woven Memories (WM): Strands of pure thought. Used to offset XP costs for spell scribing and crafting. DM’s may award = 1 per CR of encounter.
  • Echo Stone (ES): Dense, calcified emotion used for architectural anchors and structural hardening. DM’s may award = Per Great Roleplaying.
    (1 LR/WM/ES = 10 GP equivalent. 1 WM = 5 XP equivalent).

Dream Materials Harvesting Mechanics

  • Base Yield: Each player can harvest a base of 1d4 Dream Materials upon completing an adventure, drawing from any of the three types: Woven Memories (WM), Lucid Remnants (LR), or Echo Stone (ES).
  • Planar Specialization Bonus: While all planes can produce any material, adventures set in specific planes grant an additional bonus pool of +1d2 of that plane’s dominant material type.
  • Prime Material Specialization: Prime Material Plane adventures award the base 1d4 materials, plus a bonus +1d2 Woven Memories (WM).
  • Inner Planes Specialization: Inner Planes expeditions award the base 1d4 materials, plus a bonus +1d2 Lucid Remnants (LR).
  • Outer Planes Specialization: Outer Planes journeys award the base 1d4 materials, plus a bonus +1d2 Echo Stone (ES).

New Downtime Actions (DTA)

Between adventures, each character receives 1 Downtime Action per week of game time (standard: 1–2 DTA per downtime interval).

  • Harvest/Meditate: Make an ability or skill check (e.g., Lucid Dreaming, Autohypnosis, or Knowledge [The Planes], DC 15). Success yields 2d4+Character Level of a chosen resource (LR, WM, or ES). Exceeding the DC by 5 adds +4 resources.
  • Direct Construction: Spend 1 DTA and succeed on a Craft (Masonry/Carpentry/Dream-weaving) or Knowledge (Architecture & Engineering) check (DC 15) to contribute 1 Build Point (BP). Exceeding by 10 contributes 2 BP.
  • Utilize Facilities: Spend 1 DTA to utilize building functions (crafting, scribing, or attuning dream-blessings). PC’s may only Attune to one Building at a time.

Attuning to buildings

Attuning to a building is a deep, metaphysical bonding process where a character synchronizes their personal psychic frequency with a specific settlement facility, anchoring their soul to its unique magical resonance.

Because the settlement exists within the shifting conceptual fabric of the dreamscape, physical presence alone is not enough to channel a building’s most potent benefits. By dedicating a Downtime Action (DTA) to attune, a character undergoes a brief mental attunement ritual—meditating within the structure, absorbing its ambient psychic imprints, and weaving their personal aura into its architecture.

Key Rules of Attunement:

  • The One-Building Limit: Characters may only maintain an active attunement to one building at a time. This prevents a single hero from hoarding the passive benefits of multiple facilities and forces meaningful tactical choices based on what the party needs most during a given downtime interval.
  • Switching Attunement: If a character wishes to switch their attunement (for example, moving from The Pools of Liquid Memory to The Dread Armory before heading into a dangerous combat arc), they must spend 1 DTA at the new building to sever their old psychic link and establish the new one.
  • Mechanical Impact: While attuned, the character unlocks the facility’s advanced personal perks—such as continuous passive saves, daily spell-like augmentations, or special combat buffs that persist when they leave the settlement to adventure on the outer planes.

Downtime Hazard: The Reality Sever

At the end of downtime, the DM rolls a 1d20. On a 1–3, planar instability occurs: with Roll of 18+ Positive Planar Resonance occurs

  • 1: Lucidity Bleed: A waking tremor ripples through the plane. Unspent WM and LR dissipate unless a player succeeds on a DC 18 Lucid Dreaming / Concentration check to anchor them.
  • 2: Mind Flayer/Night Hag Astral Probe: An aberration discovers the settlement. The party must fend off a dream raid or lose 1 BP from an ongoing project.
  • 3: Somatic Rot: An unfinished building’s structural integrity decays into chaotic ether; requires 10 ES to stabilize before construction can resume.

Positive Planar Resonance Outcomes (Roll of 18+)
  • 18: Oneiric Abundance: The settlement’s psychic resonance harmonizes with the deep dream-tides, instantly doubling the raw material yield from the next completed adventure or gathering expedition.
  • 19: Lucid Clarity: A wave of focused mental energy washes over the community; all resident spellcasters and crafters regain a pool of temporary spell slots or reduce crafting time requirements by 50% for the next cycle.
  • 20: The Dream-Wrought Boon: The settlement taps directly into the primal creation-stuff of the planes, instantly generating 2d10 unallocated Dream Materials (split evenly between Woven Memories, Lucid Remnants, and Echo Stone) without requiring a gathering expedition.

The Reality Sever Expanded Hazard Table

When a roll of 1 to 3 occurs on the standard 1d20 downtime hazard check, the settlement undergoes severe conceptual fracturing. Instead of a flat result, roll a 1d20 on the comprehensive hazard table below to determine the exact catastrophe striking the community:

  1. Lucid Bleed: A waking tremor ripples through the plane. Unspent Woven Memories and Lucid Remnants dissipate unless characters succeed on a DC 18 Lucid Dreaming or Concentration check.
  2. Mind Flayer Astral Probe: An advanced illithid scouting party discovers the settlement’s psychic beacon. The party must fend off a sudden dream raid or lose 1 BP from an ongoing project.
  3. Somatic Rot: An unfinished building’s structural integrity decays into chaotic ether; requires 10 Echo Stone to stabilize before construction can resume.
  4. Memory Leak: The settlement’s archives experience a cascading data failure. All active spell research, mapping progress, and scribing projects are set back by one full downtime interval.
  5. Nightmare Inversion: The local dream-tides twist inward, transforming the Orchard of Hypnagogia and similar resource-yielding structures into toxic briars that deal 3d6 psychic damage to harvesters.
  6. Gravitational Shear: A sudden shift in local planar physics severs anchoring cables, causing one random Tier 2 or lower building to detach and drift into the void until reeled back in with 2 DTA of effort.
  7. The Phantom Toll: A predatory thought-form manifests demanding conceptual tribute; the settlement must surrender 20 units of any single resource or suffer a permanent -2 penalty to defense checks for a month.
  8. Ethereal Parasitosis: Invasive astral larvae infest the settlement’s foundations, draining 5 Echo Stones worth of structural reinforcement and requiring a specialized cleansing ritual (DC 20 Heal or Knowledge [The Planes]).
  9. Chrono-Stutter: Local time fractures, causing construction teams to loop endlessly in yesterday’s actions. All active Direct Construction downtime actions for this interval yield 0 BP.
  10. The Somnambulist Surge: A wave of collective sleepwalking grips the populace. Residents wander blindly into hazardous outer zones, requiring a DC 16 Survival or Listen check to herd everyone back safely without injury.
  11. Resonance Cascades: The Alchemical Crucible over-pressurizes due to a psychic feedback loop, destroying half of the facility’s current chemical inventory and inflicting a temporary -4 penalty on all crafting checks.
  12. Amnesiac Fog: A heavy, pearlescent mist rolls over the settlement, wiping short-term training regimens. All characters lose the benefits of any temporary downtime buffs or trained skill bonuses gained in the last two weeks.
  13. Doppelgänger Drift: Phantasmal reflections detach from sleeping inhabitants and roam the streets mimicking their appearance, sowing widespread paranoia and temporarily halting all trade and cooperative downtime actions.
  14. Dimensional Undertow: A localized spatial sinkhole opens beneath the Trade Ring, swallowing a random vendor stall and scattering its inventory across the untamed Waking Drift.
  15. Psychic Feedback Spike: The Oneiric Anchor suffers an overload pulse. Every spellcaster within the settlement must succeed on a DC 16 Will save or be stunned for 1d4 rounds as ancient memories flood their conscious mind.
  16. Astral Squall: A violent gale of razor-sharp starlight and crystallized emotion batters the exterior fortifications, reducing the structural defense value of the settlement’s outer walls by 10% until repaired.
  17. Curse of the Waking Death: A heavy lethargy hangs over the settlement; characters must spend double the normal DTA for any action this cycle as their physical bodies fight off overwhelming exhaustion.
  18. Identity Fracture: The boundary between individual psyches blurs, causing random inhabitants (and potentially players) to temporarily swap class feature proficiencies or skill ranks for 24 hours.
  19. Void Tithe: A tear opens directly into the deep astral void, sucking away unassigned structural materials. The settlement instantly loses 1d6 Build Points worth of raw resources from its general stockpiles.
  20. Titan Awakening: A dormant, gargantuan dream-entity stirs deep beneath the settlement’s bedrock, causing a violent planar earthquake that instantly damages all unanchored structures and forces a DC 22 Concentration check just to cast spells.

Master Building

The Oneiric Anchor is a monumental, spire-like nexus of conceptual architecture that serves as the metaphysical linchpin of the entire settlement, projecting a stabilizing field of reality that anchors abstract dreamstuff into tangible physical form. Without the structural resonance and dimensional authority provided by this central monolith, the settlement’s foundation remains too fragile to support advanced infrastructure, locking out higher-tier developments until the anchor is upgraded.

Each advancement of this master building requires a unique, metaphysical catalyst representing a monumental milestone in the campaign, preventing players from progressing purely through standard downtime resource accumulation.

The holding cells are not barred with iron, but enclosed by shimmering, mercury-like sheets of psychic static that gently unravel the memories and intentions of anyone trapped within. Inside this suffocating hush, time stretches into an eternal haze where prisoners gradually forget their spells, their grudges, and even their own names, while translucent siphons in the ceiling steadily harvest their drifting thoughts, condensing the stolen cognition into glowing filaments of spun memory to fuel the village above.

The ground is blanketed in a restless, smoldering mist that cushions the sparking steps of half-formed phantoms, shadow-cloaked coursers, and obsidian-scaled mounts grazing on patches of luminescent hypnagogic lichen. In place of mundane grain, the mangers overflow with crystallized panic and soothing, candied lullabies to keep the volatile planar beasts tractable, while handlers groom manes that dissolve into drifting embers and weave starlight into saddles, preparing these otherworldly creatures to carry their riders weightlessly across the shifting astral winds.

10. Alchemical Crucible (Magic Laboratory)

Suspended over a subterranean fissure of iridescent psychic magma, The Alchemical Crucible is a chaotic yet meticulously ordered laboratory where the laws of mundane chemistry dissolve into pure conceptual transmutation. Intricate networks of blown dream-glass alembics, spiraling condensation coils, and floating brass retorts siphon raw, unshaped lucid remnants and simmer them alongside distilled emotional vapors and calcified memories. The air is thick with the crackle of volatile static and the sharp, ozone-and-cinnamon scent of shifting reality, while alchemists in heavy, lead-lined silk coats tend to cauldrons that bubble with liquid epiphanies and bottled phantasms, forging potent elixirs that can alter a mortal’s physical fortitude, awaken latent psychic power, or condense an entire spell into a single, luminescent draught.

Perched atop a solitary spire that pierces the swirling dreamscape, The Mirror of Prophecy is an immense, circular pool of liquid silver mercury suspended vertically in a frame of intricately carved, fossilized memory-wood. Its glassy surface remains undisturbed by planar winds, acting as a tranquil psychic aperture that reflects not the viewer’s physical form, but rippling glimpses of distant planes, unspooling timelines, and the deepest sub-strata of sleeping minds across the multiverse. When awakened by a focused thought or a whispered query, the silvery surface churns into luminous, three-dimensional visions of unfolding events and hidden truths, casting an ethereal, violet glow across the silent chamber and granting those who gaze into its depths an unyielding, prophetic clarity that shatters deception and scrying wards alike.

Towering monoliths of cut dream-crystal ring the perimeter like tuning forks, vibrating in resonance to establish an unshakeable planar anchor that cuts cleanly through the shifting, turbulent tides of the dreamscape. When activated by an incantation or spoken recall word, the central aperture erupts in a blinding, silent column of cerulean light that folds the fabric of the Astral and Material planes instantly together, guiding travelers through the void with absolute precision and entirely eliminating the harrowing risk of planar drift or spatial mishap.

Workshops, Production & Crafting

13. The Lucid Loom (Smithy / Forge)

The Lucid Loom is an airy, cathedral-like workshop where the boundary between craftsmanship and pure imagination dissolves, centered around a colossal loom sculpted from polished meteoritic iron and floating beams of solid moonlight. Instead of wool or flax, the rhythmic, clacking shuttles weave shimmering strands of raw memory, calcified emotion, and iridescent lucid remnants directly into physical form. Ethereal artisans guide the humming threads with thought alone, spinning translucent cloaks of pure misdirection, forging weapons that gleam with psionic sharpness, and tempering armor from woven nightmares—all without the need for mundane fire or hammers, as the loom bends the malleable logic of the dream realm to bind complex magical enchantments into tangible relics in a fraction of mortal time.

Within this hushed, imposing chamber, armaments do not merely hang idle; they pulse with a cold, spectral luminescence, continually tempered by the ambient psychic pressures of the dream realm to cut across the boundary between the material and the ethereal. Lit by suspended spheres of warm, amber dream-light, the marketplace hums with the cosmopolitan chatter of extraplanar merchants—from towering Mercane traders and shadowy Githzerai scouts to shimmering projections of waking-world peddlers. Here, conventional currency is entirely ignored in favor of intangible treasures; market scales balance bottled epiphanies against spun threads of memory, while glass vitrines showcase planar curios, exotic spell components, and rare astral relics, offering an ever-shifting hub of commerce where one traveler’s discarded nightmare is bartered as another’s indispensable treasure.

The air within the chapel is thick with the sweet, meditative fragrance of burning astral frankincense, while a soft, soundless chanting resonates directly within the minds of those who kneel before the dais. Rather than honoring a single pantheon, the altar serves as a sacred conduit to the raw, archetypal forces of cosmic devotion, filtering drifting prayers and holy revelations into tangible beams of golden starlight that bathe supplicants in an aura of profound grace, replenishing divine spellcasters with extra reserves of faith and weaving a protective ward of life-force that shields mortal souls against death magic and planar decay.

Unlike traditional scriptoriums that rely on paper, this repository holds prayer-crystals, resonant singing bowls, and glowing slates that project holy scriptures directly into the minds of the faithful. Within this profound isolation, the chaotic static of the dream realm ceases completely; psionic energies coalesce into crystalline clarity, mental disciplines sharpen into razor-like focus, and mortal minds expand outward into the silent dark to master supernatural techniques and fortify their inner will against any psychic intrusion.

Dominating the village skyline atop a slender, spiraling tower of translucent basalt, The Chronos Astrolabe is a colossal mechanism of interlocking, floating brass rings, crystal gears, and levitating sapphire lenses that spin silently in defiance of local gravity. At its core burns a suspended pendulum of pure, solidified temporal force, tracing the shifting time dilation, planar tides, and celestial alignments between the chaotic drift of the dreamscape and the rigid progression of the Prime Material plane. The surrounding observation platform is bathed in the rhythmic, staccato clicks of ticking possibility and the shimmering refraction of refracted starlight, granting astrologers and planar voyagers an unyielding grasp over the flow of momentum—sharpening their tactical reflexes, predicting sudden cosmic convergences, and even allowing them to reach into the ticking gears to momentarily fracture and rewind the immediate threads of time itself.

25. The Theatre of Echoes

is a surreal, multi-dimensional amphitheater suspended within a pocket of shimmering twilight, where the boundaries between performance, memory, and tangible reality completely dissolve. Built from iridescent mother-of-pearl echo-stone and draped in velvet curtains woven from the living thoughts of sleeping gods, the theatre features a stage that physically morphs to mirror any setting—historical, mythical, or entirely imagined—conjured by its director.

Rather than entertaining mere spectators, the performances enacted upon this stage draw upon the collective unconsciousness of the settlement’s residents to actively rewrite local probability across the wider planes. Actors, bards, and visiting adventurers step into scripted roles of legendary proportions, and as the climax of the play is reached, the metaphysical energy generated by the audience’s emotional resonance bleeds directly into reality.

  • Tier 1: A rudimentary open-air stage of flat echo-stone slabs and shifting drapes; grants players and resident bards a +2 circumstance bonus on Perform checks and Diplomacy within the settlement.
    • Build Cost: 15 LR, 15 WM, 15 ES | 2 BP
  • Tier 2: Standard amphitheater with conceptual projection lighting; once per week, a successfully staged performance generates a pool of 2 temporary “Narrative Reroll” tokens that players can spend on any d20 roll during an adventure.
    • Build Cost: 30 LR, 30 WM, 30 ES | 4 BP
  • Tier 3: Professional-grade reality-stage equipped with astral acoustic dampeners; allows the theatre to dynamically alter minor physical laws within the settlement’s borders during a production (such as localized zero-gravity, enhanced illumination, or absolute silence).
    • Build Cost: 60 LR, 60 WM, 60 ES | 6 BP
  • Tier 4: Masterwork dramatic nexus; actors can reenact specific historical or prophetic scenarios to cast localized, permanent conceptual wards over the settlement, such as rendering the entire community invisible to astral scrying or masking its psychic signature from extraplanar predators.
    • Build Cost: 120 LR, 120 WM, 120 ES | 8 BP
  • Tier 5: The Sovereign Stage of Absolute Myth; capable of enacting grand cosmic tragedies and triumphant epics that temporarily rewrite local planar law, allowing the settlement to completely ignore environmental hazards, weather anomalies, or hostile magical dead-zones within its borders for the duration of a performance.
    • Build Cost: 240 LR, 240 WM, 240 ES | 12 BP

26 The Elemental Towers

are a pentad of monolithic spires built from specialized resonance materials that anchor the raw, unbridled forces of the inner planes directly into the settlement’s foundations. Each tower houses a concentrated elemental crucible at its peak, allowing residents to harness primordial hazards and convert them into protective wards or offensive mastery.

Because the settlement’s infrastructure operates on a unified 5-tier upgrade path, all five elemental towers share an identical resource cost progression per tier:

  • Tier 1: 15 LR, 15 WM, 15 ES | 2 BP
  • Tier 2: 30 LR, 30 WM, 30 ES | 4 BP
  • Tier 3: 60 LR, 60 WM, 60 ES | 6 BP
  • Tier 4: 120 LR, 120 WM, 120 ES | 8 BP
  • Tier 5: 240 LR, 240 WM, 240 ES | 12 BP
